How AI and Computer Vision Revolutionized
Bill Payments in the U.S.
Founded in 2016, a U.S. fintech set out to make bill payments faster and more efficient. Luby partnered with the company to bring this vision to life — building a robust Android app powered by AI and computer vision that automated invoice reading and payments, helping the fintech secure major funding from top-tier VCs.

Challenge
Scale on Android
In a market still dependent on paper invoices and mailed checks, the company's mission was to simplify payments through technology. The client turned to Luby as a consultative and technical partner to lead development and expand its reach across the U.S. fintech market.
Android at iOS parity
The iOS app had launched successfully, but half of U.S. users were on Android — leaving a massive share of the market untapped. The Android app had to be built from scratch at the same quality bar.
AI capture at scale
Shipping AI and computer vision for invoice capture that stayed accurate and fast as volume grew, rather than a demo that worked only on clean documents.
Performance and maintainability
The original Java codebase limited performance and slowed the team down. Improving technical scalability and maintainability meant rebuilding in Kotlin.
Secure payment integrations
Connecting to financial providers such as Plaid securely and quickly, so users could link bank accounts for real-time payments and transfers.
Solution
Native Android, AI, and agile delivery
A dedicated fintech squad built the Android app with AI and computer vision to read invoices and execute payments — starting in Java, then rebuilding in Kotlin for performance and stability.
01
A dedicated fintech squad
Two Android developers, one iOS developer, one QA engineer and one product owner — working with the client's product team in Scrum, joining planning and iterations to understand user needs and find improvement opportunities.
02
Native Android with AI
The Android app was built with AI and computer vision to read invoices and execute payments — starting in Java, then rebuilt in Kotlin for performance and stability.
03
Continuous evolution
As the client matured, it internalized much of product development but kept relying on Luby for specialized engineering — maintenance, test automation, releases, and integrations with financial providers.
